The Truth About Christians And Generational Curses

As Christians, it is so important that we continue to study the Word of God. The Word of God is living and shines truth over so many lies of the enemy. One of these lies that I believed for too long was about generational curses. And it is by God’s grace that the truth of this has been revealed and I am set free. So if you suspect any generational curses in your life, there’s great news. Keep reading!

The Importance Of Our Relationship With God

Growing up, I had a lot of older Christians to look up to. I would see many preachers and teachers doing wonderful ministry, healing the sick, and doing miracles. If I ever needed prayer, I would always go to them thinking that “God would surely listen to them, even if He doesn’t listen to me”. This would go on even into my adult life. And while asking another Christian to stand with you in agreement for prayer is a wonderful thing, when you start depending on someone else’s prayer instead of growing in your own faith, it becomes a form of idolatry.

Why is that? Because when Jesus died, He removed anything that stood in the way between us and the Father.

At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open.
- Matthew 27: 51-52 (NIV)

That means we have our own access to God. Jesus’s death allowed a direct relationship with the Holy One that was not available before. So why should we put anything or anyone between us and the Father? That includes other preachers and teachers, who are his servants.

Ok, so what does this have to do with generational curses? Because I had not searched for God beyond receiving salvation and always depended on other more “godly” men and women to tell me what God says, I never learned the truth of the living Word.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
- Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

And that led me to be deceived when it comes to generational curses. I thought I had general curses placed on me and I was paying the price. It wasn’t until I listened to one of Andrew Womack’s sermons that it clicked.

The Truth About Christians And Generational Curses

Even as a Christian, I sometimes have a hard time comprehending the heights and depths of Jesus’s crucifixion. I knew that He died for my sin and for the sin of the world. But the Bible says, Jesus actually became a curse for us.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”
- Galatians 3:13 (NIV)

So where does the concept of generational curses even come from? We see through the book of Exodus where God told the Israelites they shall not worship any other God. He told them over and over again the right things to do because they kept rebelling against God. And that was when God gave them the law because they couldn’t stop being rebellious people. To break the law is to be cursed, down to the third and fourth generation (Exodus 34:7).

But on that cross, Jesus took every sin and curse, no matter what kind and how bad, upon himself. Jesus has already set us free. When we accept Jesus into our lives, He has already set us free from all chains. But even as a Christian, I wasn’t fully aware of this truth. I still lived as if I was under some generational curses. And our lying, deceiving enemy loves for us to believe that. The enemy loves for us to believe that he has the power over us to continue the curse and that we can’t do anything about it.

But Christ has already set us free. It was done, it was finished. There is nothing we need to do extra to get these generational curses off of us. We must stand firm in this truth and live in it.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
- Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Living In Freedom

So why did this take me so long to figure out? I often get mad at myself about this. God has given us the tools and direct access to Him. And yet, many times we don’t want to dedicate any time or effort to get to know Him more and the truth of His word. We take our gift of salvation and ask for our blessings. And we depend on other people’s preaching, faith, and revelation when it is our responsibility to know our God on a one-to-one basis.

It’s like knowing someone we admire that invites us to their home. And instead of talking to them directly, we ask our friends to talk to them for us because we think our friends are closer to them. No preacher, teacher, or religious person should ever come between you and your relationship with God. And a Godly preacher, teacher, or religious person will tell you this themself. Because honor and glory belong to God.

When God answers our prayers, it is God who did it because it is His will to grant it. Not because some holier person than us manipulated Him to act with the right words. It may be because they have more faith than. Faith pleases God. But we need to develop our own faith and we do this when we learn the living Word of us, meditate on it, and spend quiet time listening to what the Holy Spirit says.

Let Us Pray

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that always reminds me of the truth. Thank you that You are for me and not against me. Thank You that you took every curse upon yourself so that I can be set free. Help me to live boldly in this freedom and share this joy with others. I praise Your name that I can come to the foot of Your throne directly. Thank You, Jesus. In Your name, I pray.
